The Commonwealth Weightlifting Federation (CWF) was established 63 years ago in 1947. It is one of the oldest sporting federations of the Commonwealth and is unique in that it encompasses Commonwealth nations from the five continents and recognised by the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF).

The International Weightlifting Federation (IWF), headquartered in Budapest, is the international governing body for the sport of Olympic weightlifting. The IWF was founded in 1905,[1] and has 187 member nations. The IWF acting president is Ursula Papandrea of the United States. Originally called the Fédération Haltéphile International (FHI), it changed its name to IWF between the 1972 and 1976 Summer Olympics.
