YOG2010 – Weightlifting

Just over 2 weeks to go before Singapore hosts the 1st Youth Olympic Games.

Weightlifting, one of the core Olympic sports, will feature as 1 of the 26 sports in the programme. It will see about 110 boys and girls competing across 11 weight categories from 15th to 19th Aug 2010. Singapore will be represented by Joel Law (62kg, Boys) and Jamie Emma Wee (58kg, Girls).

Supporting the YOG is the Sports Initiation Programme (SIP). Its objectives are to create and facilitate an understanding of the different Olympic sports. We will be organising the Weightlifting SIP at the competition venue on 15th and 16th Aug 2010. Athlete Assessment Session – 26th June 2010

SWF will be conducting our next Athlete Assessment Session on 26th June 2010, Sat (starting at 10.30am) at our Training Centre at Jalan Benaan Kapal.  It is open to a) members who are keen on being selected for overseas competitions (necessary for peformance evaluation) and/or b) enthusiasts of the sport (to enrich your experience and help you define your benchmarks). All athletes participating must have valid memberships (payments should be made prior to the Session. Those interested to find out more about the sport are also welcomed to attend.

VOXSPORTS

VOXSPORTS is a new dynamic ‘open media’ channel dedicated to using social media platforms to provide media and content coverage to local sports and athletes with the aim of raising Singapore’s sporting standards to match that of the international stage.

Owned and managed by VOX Group, VOXSPORTS was founded early this year with the aim of  creating excitement in the local sporting scene by promoting, developing and continuously creating awareness of local and world class sports events in the Republic. As an organisation, our team has expanded from the original 3 founders to a diverse team of 18 media, communications, IT and marketing professionals.

What’s Been Happening?

It has been a busy past few weeks for SWF.

Final preparations are underway as look forward to the Singapore Open on 22nd and 23rd May 2010 at the Toa Payoh Sports Hall (Admission is free). We’re expecting teams and officials from various neighbouring countries to arrive from the 19th.

We also have the NTO Workshop on the 20th for those looking to get involved in the sport as an official.

Aside from preparing for the Singapore Open, some of our athletes have been busy in competition.

7th Monthly Assessment Session

SWF will be conducting its 7th Monthly Assessment Session on 27 Feb 10, Sat, starting at 10.30am.

These sessions are organised to evaluate the progress and abilities of our athletes, especially in respect to selecting them for overseas competitions.

The Assessment Sessions are open to a) members who are keen on being selected for overseas competitions and b) enthusiasts of the sport. All athletes participating must have valid memberships (payments should be made prior to the Session).

Helena Does Well In England!

Based in Loughborough, England for her studies, Helena had the opportunity to participate in the English Weightlifting Championships recently in the women’s 53kg weight class. Lifting a combined weight of 119 kg (Snatch 53kg, Clean & Jerk 66kg), she placed 2nd in a field of 7 athletes.

She will participating in more competitions in the coming months as she works towards representing Singapore at the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi in October this year
